Catholics for Choice Hails the Decriminalization of Abortion in Mexico
WASHINGTON – Catholics for Choice, which uplifts and amplifies the voices of the majority of Catholics who believe in reproductive freedom, issued the following statement today from President Jamie L. Manson after Mexico’s Supreme Court unanimously ruled that it is unconstitutional for states in that country to punish abortion as a crime:
“We are overjoyed that Mexico’s Supreme Court has taken the revolutionary step of decriminalizing abortion in the country with the world’s second-largest Catholic population. This decision is a resounding victory for the fundamental values of Catholic social teaching, particularly respect for human dignity, liberation, and preferential treatment of the poor. It is also a monumental step forward for the rights of women and all pregnant people in Mexico, and it sends a hopeful signal to the scores of reproductive justice advocates working hard to win similar freedoms in countries across Latin America. We congratulate all those who helped make this historic day possible. Here in the United States, we are confronting unprecedented, extreme abortion bans in states like Texas, and our majority-Catholic U.S. Supreme Court presents a possible threat to the future of abortion rights. With reproductive freedom in mortal danger, we look to the brave activists across our southern border for strength and inspiration.”
Catholics for Choice shapes and advances sexual and reproductive ethics that are based on justice, reflect a commitment to a person’s well-being and respect, and affirm the capacity of all people to make moral decisions about their lives.
