Catholics Support EACH Woman Act
Today, Representatives Barbara Lee (D-CA) and Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) have introduced the EACH Woman Act alongside Pro-Choice Caucus Co-Chairs Diana DeGette (D-CO) and Louise Slaughter (D-NY) and 100 other members of Congress. This bill ends bans on federal funding for abortion services—like the Hyde Amendment—and ensures that every woman in the United States can access abortion services when necessary, no matter where she lives, how she receives health insurance or what she has in her wallet.
“These bans are the single biggest detriment to women’s access to abortion in the US. This important bill would free women from unjust restrictions,” said Jon O’Brien, president of Catholics for Choice.
“As a Catholic, my social justice tradition calls me to speak up for the conscience rights of all people—particularly the poorest and most vulnerable members of our society who are affected first and most by these bans. The majority of American Catholic voters agree that public funding for abortion is a Catholic social justice value.”
“In 2016 Catholics for Choice launched Abortion in Good Faith, a multi-year campaign to amplify the voices of Catholics across the country who want abortion to be accessible and affordable for everyone, regardless of their circumstance or station. Access to public funding should be based on what a woman decides is best, not on what someone else has decided she deserves.”
“I am thankful to the leaders in Congress who are doing the right thing. Catholics agree, and I call on all members of Congress to support the EACH Woman Act and policies that show compassion for women and families.”
