Catholics Unite to Defeat Colorado Personhood Ballot Measure
Catholics in Colorado joined their neighbors, friends and family in defeating a ballot measure that would have banned abortion in all circumstances and limited access to contraception and other reproductive health services in the state. These everyday Colorado Catholics spoke out in the weeks leading up to the defeat of Amendment 67 by a 2-to-1 margin, showing support for women’s moral autonomy and their right to make conscience-based decisions about their own health and lives.
Sara Hutchinson Ratcliffe, domestic program director at Catholics for Choice, said, “Today, we are proud to have forged a renewed partnership with the Colorado Organization for Latina Opportunity and Reproductive Rights (COLOR). Together, we helped lift up the voices of the majority of local Catholics throughout the state. Catholics saw Amendment 67 for what it is—an attack on the rights of every individual to make their own choices, follow their own conscience and exercise their own religious liberty. The majority of Catholics very clearly support policies that enable women and men to make their own decisions about whether and when to have children.
“In Colorado there are 780,000 Catholics and three active bishops. Today, the majority has spoken and justice has been done.”
Catholics for Choice was on the ground in Colorado over the past few months, engaging local supporters and community leaders in the effort to defeat the ballot measure and helping them raise their voices in a print and radio campaign across the state.
